4WD Technology

'4WD' is a concept that is only associated with the engine controlling four wheels of the vehicle, typical in cars. Generally, four wheel drive cars run using front/rear wheel drive on normal roads. But if the driver wants to take the automobile on snowy surfaces and slippery roads, and in challenging weather conditions; he has the option of letting the engine control all the four wheels by engaging the '4WD' function.

AWD Technology

The AWD technology relates to the engine operating all the axles, irrespective of how many wheels the vehicle has. So, AWD relates to the engine control setup used in cargo trucks and big military vehicles. In AWD vehicles, the driver does not have an option of changing the engine control system of the car, unlike in 4WD ones.
